"HOW DO THEY DO THAT?"

The Card Corporation has come up with a solution to the time-consuming and costly business of small quantity printing orders. Its database-orientated technology completely automates order processing, typesetting and pre-press preparation. Incoming information is batched automatically, according to the printing method needed. The batch jobs are then sent to printers for overnight production. Ivor Jacobs explains how it works: "Customers do the type layout and make-up themselves, which means that the company doesn't need to proof check the work. Then, because many smaller jobs can be batched together, the company's overheads are considerably reduced".

As a result these savings are passed straight on to their clients. Understandably, the nuts and bolts of how it's done are kept a closely guarded secret from the Card Corporation's commercial competitors.
